The project is located in the Xizang Autonomous Region. The dam foundation elevation is 3198.00m, the maximum dam height is 116m, and the total length of the dam crest is 389.50m. The width of the dam top is 19.00m, and the maximum bottom width is 76.00m. It is the first hydropower station built in China on the main stream of the the Yarlung Zangbo River. The layout of the hydroproject is gravity dam+powerhouse behind the dam, consisting of left and right bank water retaining dam sections, overflow dam sections, powerhouse dam sections, sand flushing bottom outlet dam sections, dam behind ground powerhouse, stilling pool and apron.
