On October 12, Nie Jianguo, an academician of the CAE Member and professor of Tsinghua University, was invited to guide the work of steel structures in Central South China, accompanied by Wang Haishan, executive vice president, Zhang Ke, president of the Design and Research Institute and other leaders.
This time, Academician Nie vividly taught the employees the special topic of "Innovation and Practice of Prefabricated Structures", with "steel-concrete composite structures and their applications" as the introduction theme. He explored the specific connotation of high-performance structures from the mechanical properties of engineering structures, the shortcomings of traditional steel structures and concrete structures, and analyzed and compared the technical and economic performance of pure steel structures, concrete structures, and steel-concrete composite structures. Through a large number of engineering examples, he gave wonderful lectures to employees from the aspects of "current problems", "countermeasures and measures", "innovation and practice", "prospects of prefabricated buildings", etc.

He stated that technological innovation is the fundamental way to solve the problems existing in the current field of building structures, and it is an unremitting driving force to promote the sustainable development of high-performance building structures. It is necessary to combine needs, highlight characteristics, and solve problems. Innovation should not be pursued for the sake of innovation, and problems should not be created without problems. He emphasized that technological innovation in engineering structures should originate from engineering, service engineering, and leading engineering, and hoped that all employees would adhere to the belief of "not only books, not superior, not exclusive, not exclusive, and only practical".
During the two-hour lecture, Academician Nie used a humorous, witty, and easy to understand teaching method to enable employees to quickly understand the application of the "steel-concrete composite panel bridge" technology, which is characterized by "lightweight large-span, prefabricated assembly, and rapid construction" and is applied in various large-scale bridge constructions throughout the country.

Introduction to Academician Nie Jianguo
Born in Hengyang County, Hunan Province in 1958, he is an academician of the CAE Member and an expert in structural engineering. Director of the Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Safety and Durability Education at Tsinghua University, Dean of the Future Urban and Infrastructure Research Institute at Tsinghua University, Director of the Academic Committee at Tsinghua University, Vice Chairman of the Tsinghua University Association for Science and Technology, and Foreign Academician of the Japanese Academy of Engineering. Academic part-time positions include editor in chief of the Journal of Building Structures, vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Civil Engineering, convener of the Civil Engineering Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, honorary president of the China Steel Structure Association, director of the Expert Committee of the China Steel Structure Association, and director of the Technical Committee of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development for Over limit High rise Building Engineering.
Engaged in long-term research on civil engineering structures, the results have been widely applied in fields such as building structures, bridge structures, special structures, and underground structures, achieving significant technical, economic, and social benefits. As the first author, I won one National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, one National Technology Invention First Prize, and one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Innovation Team) each. He won the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Innovation Prize, the National Model Teacher, the National exemplary individual and other honors.
